Many customers already have standard general-purpose inverters on hand and want to reuse them when replacing motors to cut costs. This is a practical consideration, yet there are critical technical points to note when pairing them with permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs).

Most standard inverters are designed for asynchronous induction motors, based on the logic that the motor generates no magnetic field on its own and requires the inverter to provide excitation. By contrast, PMSM rotors come with built-in permanent magnets that produce a fixed magnetic field. They require an inverter that can precisely track rotor position and adjust output in real time. The fundamental control logic of the two does not match. Forcing a mismatched pairing commonly leads to on-site issues:
start-up jitter, unstable operation, and frequent overcurrent alarms on the inverter. In the long run, excessive harmonics and high operating heat will reduce operational efficiency and even shorten the service life of both the motor and inverter.

It is not entirely impossible to match a standard inverter to a PMSM, but the prerequisites are very strict:
the inverter must support PMSM control mode (or encoder closed-loop vector control), allow accurate input of motor parameters such as flux linkage, inductance and pole pairs, and complete full motor parameter auto-tuning. Even with these conditions met, the performance in field weakening speed range, torque response speed and protection strategies still cannot compare with dedicated matched drive solutions.

Haifeike: Deliver Pre-Matched Permanent Magnet Motors and Inverters
Haifeike specializes in integrated matching of permanent magnet motors and dedicated inverters. Our vector inverters (models including HI320E, HI350E, HI500B) adopt dedicated control algorithms for PMSMs, enabling real-time tracking of rotor magnetic pole position. They deliver lower output current harmonics, smoother torque and faster dynamic response.
We complete parameter presetting and joint debugging according to actual working conditions before delivery, allowing plug-and-run on-site installation and saving substantial time spent on on-site parameter tuning and commissioning.

Instead of struggling with whether an old inverter can “make do”, it is more reliable to select a fully matched integrated solution based on your actual working conditions. Simply specify your load type, speed regulation range, start-stop frequency and on-site interference environment, and you will get a more stable drive solution with far fewer operational troubles in the later stage.
